When is the best time to start HypnoBirthing?
You can start the course at any time in your pregnancy. It is a good idea to start as early as possible as the sooner you start practising the techniques, the more effective they will be. Many couples start the course between 20 and 30 weeks of pregnancy.
Will I have to believe in hypnosis to benefit from HypnoBirthing classes?
Not necessarily – you just need an open mind. The ‘hypno’ part of HypnoBirthing is essentially made up of two parts: learning to relax, and replacing our conditioned beliefs that birth is scary and painful with positive expectations. This is delivered through relaxation exercises (both in class and at home) and with at home ‘affirmation’ tracks. That’s all there is to it!
Do I need to attend classes? Can I not just read the book?
Reading the HypnoBirthing textbook by Marie Mongan is a good start. It really helped me to understand all the ways our body is made for birthing and gave me a lot of faith in birth. But I found the classes to be invaluable in learning all of the techniques and getting my partner involved. It was also really important in convincing me of everything I had read and understanding how to put it into practice. Perhaps comparable to the difference between learning to drive by reading the highway code, and getting behind the wheel to practise.
Is HypnoBirthing suitable for people who have already given birth?
Absolutely! The techniques you learn will be just as effective, whether you are familiar with birth or not. If you have had a difficult first birth and are looking for a way to do things differently this time around, I would recommend a short additional session prior to you attending the first class. I am happy to offer this free of charge.
